Madonnari are Italian street painters that can turn a blank pavement into colorful works of art. Every May, they come to Santa Barbara and allow us to see them in action, coating the Mission plaza with beautiful, gigantic images at this unique festival.
This festival is called I Madonnari and will be held from May 28-30 this year. And this time it’s going to be extra special, as it is the 30th anniversary of the first day Santa Barbara brought this art form to the western hemisphere! It was inspired by the event’s sister festival in Grazie di Curtatone, Italy.
There is no admission fee and the event runs from 10AM-6PM every day, making it a great daytime event to see on your own or with friends and family. There’s more than just street painting, though!
The Italian Market surrounds the art, providing visitors with a wide array of Italian dishes and products. Funds raised by the festival benefit a non-profit called The Children’s Creative Project, which offers funding for children interested in the arts.
All in all, it’s a fun and unique event that’s a must-see if you’re staying at Marina Beach Motel that weekend. Plus it benefits a great organization, so it’s a win-win!
If you haven’t booked your vacation at Marina Beach Motel yet, there’s still time. Schedule your visit today!
