Santa Barbara Art Experiences

Being on the coast of California, many people think Santa Barbara is just a beach town. However, Santa Barbara art experiences are also huge in the community. In fact, there are a few new art experiences that have opened up for the fall season. Read on to find out a little more about Santa Barbara art!

Santa Barbara Art History

Did you know that Santa Barbara was the most important art colony between San Francisco and Los Angeles? In fact, many top artists of the time settled there, including Henry Chapman Ford, John Gamble and Carl Oscar Borg. There was even an art school opened, which firmly implanted the area in the art scene. Today, there is a vibrant art scene in the downtown area, with many art galleries and even 1st Thursdays! 1st Thursdays is a free event where galleries and artists showcase their work, with live music and food. Art is a community and events like these help the culture thrive.

New Fall Experiences

Open this Labor Day weekend is the Santa Barbara Studio Artists tour. “The largest and most prestigious event of its kind on the Central California Coast,” people from all over meet and get a chance to understand the creative process. The tour happens once per year and brings together some of the top professionals in the world together. All proceeds from the tour go towards helping people with disabilities create art. At the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, a new Greco Roman exhibit was added this fall. This exhibit focuses on photography and history of the 19th century and how the Greco Romans influenced media and society. Lastly, another fall exhibit opened at the Marcia Burtt Gallery that has artists “emphasize ornamental elements by using complex compositions and formal flare to produce decorative paintings and photographs.”
